Same Sun (GMT+7)

2025-2026

we live in the same time

under the same rule

but…not the same truth

so, how can I watch the sunset with you,

the same.

2026

Revisiting an earlier artwork, Sam Sun (GMT+7), in its 2025 version through an alternative approach to techniques and methodologies. It constructs the perception of light manifested across three dimensions: the use of color to create light within the painting, the interplay of actual light and shadow upon the thick impasto surface, and the emergence of traces from an intense light source on a plastic surface like Mylar film.

Separated by over 3,000 kilometers from Bangkok to Yogyakarta, we stand upon the same reality, under the same time zone. Yet, you and I can never watch the sun set simultaneously, because our time is never truly equal in reality. This gap is widened to expose the fragility of what humans attempt to construct and the meanings we assign to time.

The existence of reality—defined through human meaning-making on the plane of dividing space into time zones between Bangkok and Yogyakarta—is inherently fragile. Perception through light, which constructs human reality and the things we define, remains an ambiguity that is difficult to fully comprehend. These gaps create a space that breaks free from conventional systems of temporal and luminous perception, presented through paintings of sunsets that differ by one hour, despite both cities sharing the exact same numerical time on the clock. The fragility of the meanings humans attempt to classify and categorize—the reality occurring in nature—clearly projects as an expression of melancholic longing for the days gone by. It is simultaneously an act of submission to, and resistance against, existing under a constructed system of reality.

Humanity defines, frames, and controls reality to render it comprehensible and utilitarian. And because of this very endeavor, you over there and I right here can no longer watch the sunset together, even though we exist in the exact same time.

Along the GMT+7 time zone, separated by over 3,000 kilometers from Bangkok to Yogyakarta, both locations stand within the same designated hour. The defined and codified truth is reduced to time as a mere calculated metric. Meanwhile, the visceral reality unfolding right before our eyes is stripped of its significance, even though such truths have always sustained our human spirit.

This artwork unveils that lost gap of time. Clocks insist there is no difference between Bangkok and Yogyakarta, yet the evening sun sets across their horizons 40 minutes apart. That undefined interval exists, perhaps, because the value of romance has been diminished and neglected until it has nearly faded away, leaving only an unnoticed reality in its wake. Humans are sensitive beings; we can perceive that prolonged, breathless moment that offers no answer. The echo of our questions is swallowed by a modern society where "romance" has been reduced to a mere loanword.

We exist within the identical rules and temporal order of a reality we have constructed. Yet, in our individual "subjective truths," our suns never truly rise and set in unison, despite sharing the "same" time. So, with me standing here and you so far away, how can the two of us ever watch that same evening sun set together?

Once Were

We used to be here

Before... it turned into there

Emptiness moved in to take over

Burying chipped dreams beneath the pristine earth

Framing our desires into a beautiful cage

Sowing hopes exactly as desired

Scattered as sweet, bruised seeds

Flourishing beautifully amidst the ruins of shadows

.

Then there became over there

And we... are left with no proof of our existence

And we... don't know where to bury the fragments of our dreams

Space and distance emerge alongside the shifting of time and memory. The place where we once stood is continuously pushed further away by change. The distance that manifests within the heart has no metric unit; rather, it is measured by the breadth and depth of the hollow void within.

The painting presents a space that is both curated and displaced, simultaneously revealing traces of what once resided there through an atmosphere of timelessness. Everything seems harmoniously woven, yet strangely contradictory. The masses of nature align and collide through the human process of arrangement—the construct of a "garden." This serves as a reflection of the dimensions of the internal void within us, a manifestation of what time and memory inflict upon space and distance.

Deep, melancholic indigo is reintroduced to narrate the abnormal once again. The painting depicts a seemingly perfect human figure—where muscles, skin, and bones appear superficially normal—yet it conceals profound irregularities. Through postures, proportions, specific muscle groups, and certain bones that are anatomically impossible, the artwork becomes a superimposition of an anomaly disguised as normality. This visual dissonance ultimately reflects the internal condition concealed beneath the skin and flesh.

These distortions represent human endeavor in the contemporary world, as well as the toll the world exacts in exchange for that effort. It embodies the desensitized gaze with which we encounter reality—whether we glance past it or deliberately look away. The abnormality is glaringly present right before us, yet it is we ourselves who indifferently normalize it.

There is a butterfly in my room

A painted elegy to the Luna Moth: A nocturnal creature naturally found in the depths of the night forest, yet it inexplicably appears within a human room. With its exquisite beauty and tragically short lifespan, this breathtaking transience is invoked to narrate contemporary love and relationships with profound accuracy...

Indigo Memory

Indigo represents a fragile state of emotion and time. The painting captures the liminal space between nostalgia and sorrow—a quiet, shattered emotional state reflecting the relationship we call "friendship," especially when the past, present, and future fail to align with human expectations.

An atmosphere of ambiguity permeates the work, where light and shadow exist within the intersection of reality and dreams. Between the surfaces of dim lighting and shadows, the stains of time seem to drift among the table and chairs. Indigo shadows spread and flow seamlessly between people, objects, places, and even the shadow of light itself. The artwork is rich with symbols and contextual cues that convey a very specific moment through an ordinary gathering of friends sitting in a circle: a space of repose. The canvas reveals everyday objects from that period—photographs, clothing, and notebook pages inscribed with poetry. Above all, the drinking glasses serve as crucial witnesses. They signify the shared time spent together in this relaxing space, while the individual identities that have been lost to the passage of time are vividly reflected in the unique characteristics of each glass.
