Blue Sunflower
Blue Sunflower presents sunflowers in blue under the condition of moonlight. Although the colour and atmosphere differ from our familiar image of the flower, its form remains recognizable as a sunflower. This tension between recognition and unfamiliarity forms the starting point of the work.
The name “sunflower” is closely associated with the sun, while the painting places the flower under another source of light. The work therefore considers what happens when a familiar thing is placed within a different condition of seeing.
Through painting, I use colour, form, atmosphere and pictorial space to create a gap between word-image-meaning. The sunflower remains recognizable, yet the meaning attached to it becomes uncertain. Rather than representing an unusual sunflower, the work uses painting as a way to examine how changes in visual conditions can affect what we recognize and how we understand it.
